UK MoD Awards £3.16M Across Three Contracts to Develop Low-Cost Drone Interceptors
The UK Ministry of Defence has awarded £3.16 million across three contracts to develop low-cost interceptors capable of shooting down drones and other aerial threats. The UK is the first of five European partner nations to complete contract awards under the joint Low-Cost Air Defence Effectors (LCADE) programme. Selected suppliers are Frankenberg Technologies, Greenjets, and Cambridge Aerospace.

Highlights
- The UK MoD awarded £3.16 million across three contracts on 13 July to develop low-cost drone interceptors under the LCADE programme.
- The three selected UK suppliers are Frankenberg Technologies, Greenjets, and Cambridge Aerospace, all committed to building domestic manufacturing capacity.
- The UK is the first of five LEAP partner nations — also including Poland, France, Italy, and Germany — to complete its national contract awards.
- Russia launched over 200 drones per day against Ukraine in March 2026, cited by the MoD as evidence of the urgent need for affordable mass-intercept solutions.
- The next phase will focus on identifying solutions scalable to volume production across all five partner nations, requiring robust supply chains for rapid delivery.
UK MoD Awards £3.16M Across Three Contracts to Develop Low-Cost Drone Interceptors
The UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) has awarded a combined £3.16 million to three suppliers to develop low-cost interceptors capable of defeating drones and other aerial threats. According to a press release issued by the MoD on 13 July, the UK is the first of five European partner nations to complete contract awards under the joint programme framework.
Countering the Mass Low-Cost Drone Threat
The MoD stated: "These interceptors are designed to provide a more cost-effective means of countering drone threats. As nations begin deploying cheap, mass-produced drones at scale, the pressure on conventional air defence systems — which are both expensive and relatively slow to produce — is mounting. In March 2026, Russia was launching more than 200 drones per day against Ukraine, illustrating the sheer scale of this challenge."
Programme Background: LCADE and LEAP
The programme is formally known as Low-Cost Air Defence Effectors (LCADE) and is being delivered through the National Armaments Director (NAD) group. It forms part of a broader initiative called Low-Cost Effectors and Autonomous Platforms (LEAP).
LEAP brings together the United Kingdom, Poland, France, Italy, and Germany to jointly develop affordable effectors and autonomous systems. Each nation first conducts a domestic competition before progressing to a multilateral collaboration phase.
Three Selected Suppliers
The three companies selected by the UK MoD are:
- Frankenberg Technologies
- Greenjets
- Cambridge Aerospace
All three are UK-based and have committed to establishing manufacturing capability within the United Kingdom. The contracts are being managed by the Commercial X team within the NAD group, which is specifically focused on accelerating procurement timelines and lowering barriers to entry for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
Next Phase
The MoD noted: "The next phase will focus on identifying solutions that can be produced at volume across the five partner nations. This will require robust manufacturing capacity and reliable supply chains to ensure systems can be delivered rapidly and at scale."
