Denmark's Finance Committee Greenlights Drone and Counter-Drone Procurement
Denmark's Finance Committee (FIU) has approved a government proposal authorising the procurement of new drone and counter-drone capabilities. All associated costs will be covered within the Ministry of Defence's existing financial framework, requiring no additional budget appropriation.
In an official government statement, authorities noted: "Given the increasingly tense security situation, Denmark finds it necessary to urgently procure additional drone and counter-drone systems to further strengthen deterrence and the country's defence posture. The government has received approval from the Danish Parliament's Finance Committee (FIU) to acquire capabilities across a number of areas."
Ukraine Battlefield Experience Drives the Decision
Danish Defence Minister Jeppe Bruus stated: "Practical experience from the front lines in Ukraine clearly illustrates the critical role that drone and counter-drone capabilities play on the modern battlefield. It is therefore essential that the Danish Armed Forces rapidly strengthen this area further. Technology in this field is evolving at an extraordinary pace, and keeping up with these developments is crucial to maintaining the combat effectiveness of Denmark's armed forces."
Deputy Chief of Defence and Army Lieutenant General Henrik Berg added: "The war in Ukraine has given us a clear understanding that drone and counter-drone capabilities, used in combination with conventional means of warfare, are an important factor in building a defence force with both technological flexibility and tactical adaptability. This measure supports the armed forces' work to carry out targeted, large-scale upgrades of the relevant technologies."
Responding to the European Security Landscape
The procurement decision reflects Denmark's strategic drive to strengthen its own defence capabilities against the backdrop of the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war. Danish armed forces are expected to use this acquisition to achieve broader operational capacity across drone reconnaissance, strike, and counter-drone domains — in line with NATO allies' collective expectations for modernised defence technology.
