FAA and EASA Pledge Deeper Aviation Safety Cooperation to Address Rapid Technological Innovation
As the aviation industry enters a period of rapid technological change, the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) have formally committed to deepening their bilateral aviation safety partnership.
The commitment was announced at the 2026 FAA-EASA International Aviation Safety Conference, held in Chantilly, Virginia from June 16 to 18. The three-day event was themed "Safety Together: Innovation, Integration and Trust."
A Shared Agenda in the Face of Technological Change
The FAA highlighted that aviation technology is evolving at an unprecedented pace — from automated cockpit systems to novel airworthiness certification pathways for advanced aircraft — and that close cooperation between the two regulators is essential to keeping safety standards aligned with innovation.
FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford underscored the need for stronger international partnerships at this juncture.
"This is one of the most innovative moments in aviation — not just for the United States, but for our international partners as well," Bedford said. "By sharing information and engaging in deep dialogue on safety issues, we strengthen our international partnerships and ensure that the aviation system continues to evolve safely and efficiently."
EASA Executive Director Florian Guillermet echoed the sentiment.
"By working together, sharing expertise, and aligning our approaches, EASA and the FAA can support innovation while maintaining public confidence in aviation," Guillermet said.
Concrete Commitments
The two agencies outlined a series of specific areas for enhanced collaboration:
- Strengthening information-sharing mechanisms on safety oversight and best practices
- Advancing safety management systems toward more data-driven decision-making
- Streamlining review and approval processes for new aviation technologies
- Accelerating the safe integration of automated cockpit systems
- Modernizing pilot training and flight simulator capabilities
- Coordinating responses to emerging risks, including cyber threats, GPS interference, conflict-zone operations, and extreme weather events
Senior officials from both agencies also committed to meeting regularly to review progress and identify new priority areas.
Next Stop: Cologne
The conference brought together approximately 400 senior aviation professionals from regulatory authorities, aircraft manufacturers, airlines, and industry associations worldwide. The event is held annually, with the FAA and EASA alternating as host. Next year's conference is scheduled for June 22–24, 2027, in Cologne, Germany.
