World's First Certified Commercial Vertiport VDX Opens in UAE
The UAE General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) and Skyports Infrastructure have announced that VDX has received regulatory certification for commercial eVTOL operations, making it the world's first purpose-built, certified commercial vertiport. The milestone lays the groundwork for Dubai's commercial air taxi network, with three additional vertiports currently under development.

Highlights
- VDX, located in Dubai, has become the world's first purpose-built commercial vertiport to receive regulatory certification for eVTOL operations from the UAE's GCAA.
- The four-storey vertiport covers 3,100 square metres, features two dedicated landing pads and rapid EV charging, and can handle up to 170,000 passengers per year.
- VDX will serve as the primary hub of Dubai's Air Taxi Network; three additional vertiports are under development by Skyports and Dubai's RTA.
- The GCAA's certification process evaluated infrastructure, operational procedures, safety management, emergency preparedness, and regulatory compliance.
- The certification supports the UAE's 'We the UAE 2031' vision and Dubai's Economic Agenda D33, targeting innovation, investment, and sustainable mobility.
World's First Certified Commercial Vertiport Inaugurated in UAE
The UAE is setting a new global benchmark for Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) after certifying the world's first purpose-built commercial vertiport.
The UAE General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) and Skyports Infrastructure have jointly announced that VDX has received full regulatory certification for commercial eVTOL (electric vertical take-off and landing) operations — marking a landmark milestone in Dubai's air taxi network programme.
Registered under the GCAA's certification framework, VDX is the world's first commercially dedicated vertiport to achieve regulatory approval, paving the way for the launch of commercial air taxi services in Dubai.
VDX will serve as the first and primary hub of the Dubai Air Taxi Network. Three additional vertiports are currently under development. The full network and its facilities are being planned and built in partnership between Skyports and Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA).
A Historic First for Aviation
The certification followed a comprehensive GCAA assessment covering vertiport infrastructure, physical characteristics, operational procedures, safety management arrangements, emergency response readiness, and compliance with applicable regulatory requirements.
This milestone cements the UAE's position as a leader in aviation innovation and advanced air mobility, demonstrating the country's ability to establish robust regulatory infrastructure for emerging aircraft technologies. The certification also supports the goals of We the UAE 2031 and Dubai's Economic Agenda D33, driving innovation, attracting investment, advancing economic diversification, and enabling sustainable mobility solutions.
H.E. Saif Mohammed Al Suwaidi, Director General of the GCAA, said: "The certification of the world's first commercial vertiport is a historic achievement for the UAE and a defining moment for the future of aviation. It reflects the vision of our leadership, the maturity of our regulatory system, and the national capacity to foster innovation while ensuring the highest safety standards."
Eng. Aqeel Al Zarouni, Assistant Director General for Aviation Safety Affairs at the GCAA, emphasised that the certification demonstrates the UAE's ability to build regulatory frameworks for emerging aviation technologies: "The certification of VDX is far more than approving a new aviation facility — it demonstrates the UAE's capability to establish sound regulatory frameworks for emerging aviation technologies while maintaining the highest standards of safety and oversight."
Air Taxis Are Now Within Reach
Duncan Walker, CEO of Skyports Infrastructure, described the certification as a pivotal step toward commercial eVTOL operations: "This certification is a defining moment for advanced air mobility. It proves that the infrastructure, operational standards, and regulatory frameworks needed for commercial eVTOL services are now a reality."
VDX features two dedicated take-off and landing pads, rapid-charging infrastructure for electric aircraft, and efficient passenger processing facilities. The four-storey building covers approximately 3,100 square metres and is capable of handling up to 170,000 passengers per year once commercial operations begin.
The certification reflects close collaboration among the GCAA, Dubai's RTA, Skyports, and their strategic partners in building Dubai's future air taxi ecosystem.
Through this milestone, the UAE continues to affirm its commitment to aviation safety, sustainable mobility, and responsible innovation — while reinforcing its role in shaping the future of global transportation.
The GCAA was established in 1996 by federal cabinet decree and serves as the UAE's national civil aviation regulator, overseeing the sector in accordance with safety, security, and sustainability standards.
