Boston Dynamics Launches Spot & Orbit 5.1: New Perspectives Redefine Facility Inspection
Boston Dynamics has released the Spot & Orbit 5.1 update, introducing AI model improvements, the new Spot Cam 2 sensor, a security patrol mission mode, acoustic anomaly detection, automatic door-opening capability, and multimodal inspection support — significantly boosting efficiency and flexibility for enterprise-grade facility inspection operations.

Highlights
- Boston Dynamics released Spot & Orbit 5.1, introducing the Spot Cam 2 sensor with 4K PTZ and 25× optical zoom, integrated radiometric thermal imaging, and a 360 × 130° spherical camera.
- A new Security Patrol mission type automatically pauses Spot, activates warning lights, and captures PTZ/thermal/panoramic images upon detecting personnel, then resumes the mission without human intervention.
- Spot's automatic door-opening feature has been validated at 18 beta customers with over 2,500 successful door-opening events, supporting both automatic and access-controlled doors.
- Orbit AIVI Learning uses cloud-hosted AI models that update independently of Orbit software releases, adding new inspection items such as sight glass detection and pallet detection without disrupting existing workflows.
- Users with Spot Cam 2 and acoustic sensors can now execute multimodal mechanical inspections — combining acoustic, thermal, and video capture in a single mission with a unified Orbit report.
Boston Dynamics Launches Spot & Orbit 5.1: New Perspectives Redefine Facility Inspection
Boston Dynamics has officially released the Spot & Orbit 5.1 update, helping users accelerate deployment through new workflows, enterprise-grade management features, and upgraded data-collection sensors — substantially expanding the depth and breadth of facility inspection capabilities.
Continuously Evolving AI Models
Boston Dynamics' vision is to build an intelligent system in which Spot and Orbit continuously learn about facility conditions and improve over time. The Orbit AIVI Learning capability is the first step toward that goal — a suite of cloud-hosted models maintained by Boston Dynamics that will be refined based on Spot's most frequent and highest-value inspection tasks.
The cloud-hosted intelligence platform supports multiple large models and can be updated on a regular cadence without requiring a simultaneous Orbit software update, ensuring that adding new inspection items does not disrupt existing workflows.
This release not only strengthens existing models but also introduces new inspection capabilities, including sight glass detection and pallet detection. AIVI sensing has also been extended to Spot's body cameras and gripper camera, enabling users equipped with Spot Arm to inspect dark or hard-to-reach areas.
New Spot Cam 2 Sensor
The next-generation Spot Cam 2 sensor builds on the familiar Spot Cam+IR feature set while delivering several major upgrades:
- 4K pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ) camera with 25× optical zoom
- Integrated radiometric thermal imaging camera
- 360 × 130° spherical wide-angle camera
An onboard accessory slot is compatible with the Sorama L642 or Fluke SV600 acoustic imaging devices, offering more flexible sensor pointing angles for acoustic inspection and reserving interfaces for future expansion. Spot Cam 2 can be mounted front or rear and features eight high-brightness LED lights for illumination in dark environments.
New Security Patrol Mission Type and Mid-Mission Interruption
Version 5.1 introduces a Security Patrol mission type, giving enterprises broader surveillance coverage during off-peak hours or in sensitive areas. When Spot detects a person during patrol, it will automatically pause, activate warning lights, capture PTZ, panoramic, and thermal images, issue an alert notification, and then resume the mission.
New mission behavior logic also allows Spot to autonomously pause, redirect, or terminate a mission based on perceived conditions, without any human intervention. Users can place waypoint markers along the mission path to instruct Spot to return to its charging dock or hold in place.
Acoustic Anomaly Change Detection
Spot units equipped with the Fluke SV600 or Sorama L642 can now collect beamforming acoustic data from mechanical equipment and use change-detection algorithms to flag signals that deviate from baseline. Users can visually track equipment status changes in real time through spectrogram visualizations, adding a new dimension of insight for asset health management.
Automatic Door Opening
Spot's behavior action library continues to grow. Following the addition of stair and crosswalk actions, version 5.1 introduces automatic door opening, allowing Spot to access more areas of a facility without the need for its robotic arm.
Spot currently supports two configurations: sensor-activated automatic doors and access-controlled doors. Once on-site integration is complete, users simply add the corresponding action to a mission to allow Spot to autonomously pass through access-controlled areas.
This feature has been deployed at 18 beta customers, with over 2,500 successful door-opening events recorded to date.
Site View Inspection Path Planning
Version 5.1 further enhances Site View inspection path planning, allowing users to create more inspection items directly within the Orbit interface without physically walking the site with Spot to record waypoints.
- Spot Cam and Spot Cam+IR users can now plan PTZ captures, thermal imaging, and gauge-reading inspection actions within the Site View window.
- Spot Cam 2 users can additionally plan acoustic (leak and vibration) inspection items directly from Site View.
Multimodal Inspection and Thermal Panorama
Users equipped with Spot Cam 2, an acoustic sensor, and a mechanical inspection license can now perform multimodal mechanical inspections within a single mission — simultaneously conducting acoustic inspection, thermal imaging inspection, and video clip capture, all targeting the same location, with a unified consolidated report generated in Orbit.
Spot Cam 2 also introduces a thermal panorama feature: the sensor captures a series of thermal images that are automatically stitched together and overlaid as a layer in Site View, adding a new spectral dimension to facility condition monitoring.
Showcase Dances and Expression Actions
Recognizing that many customers showcase Spot at recruiting events, parades, or community activities, version 5.1 includes seven showcase dance routines available at no additional licensing cost — accessible via tablet after upgrading. Users should follow standard Spot operating procedures and maintain a safe distance from bystanders during operation.
