SkyDrive SD-05 eVTOL Completes 300 Test Flights Over 20 Months With Zero Incidents
Japanese eVTOL startup SkyDrive has announced that its SD-05 aircraft completed 300 test flights between November 2024 and June 2026 — a 20-month streak with zero accidents. The milestone marks a significant step toward the company's 2028 commercial launch target, with type certification work and production aircraft development continuing in parallel.

Highlights
- SkyDrive's SD-05 eVTOL completed 300 test flights between November 2024 and June 2026 with zero accidents over 20 consecutive months.
- 48 of the 300 flights were conducted at off-site locations outside SkyDrive's primary test centers to collect real-world operational data.
- SkyDrive targets 2028 for SD-05 commercial launch, with a production aircraft model planned for introduction in 2026.
- Testing took place at facilities in Toyota City, Aichi Prefecture, and Yamaguchi Kirara Expo Memorial Park, Yamaguchi Prefecture.
- Vice President Yugo Fukuhara and Head of Testing Christopher Rennie both credited a safety-first culture and cross-team collaboration as key factors in achieving the milestone.
SkyDrive SD-05 eVTOL Completes 300 Test Flights Over 20 Months With Zero Incidents
Japanese electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) developer SkyDrive has announced that its SD-05 aircraft has successfully completed 300 test flights spanning November 2024 to June 2026 — a 20-month period with a perfect zero-incident record, marking a major milestone for the company.
Building a Data Foundation for Commercial Operations
According to SkyDrive's latest press release, the flight test campaign not only evaluated the SD-05's flight performance but also generated a substantial volume of operational data. The company says this data will play a critical role in supporting regular, on-time commercial operations once the aircraft enters service, including informing decisions on when the aircraft is fit to fly.
"Completing 300 flights is a result of the continued effort of our engineers, pilots, and operations team, with safety as the top priority," said Yugo Fukuhara, Vice President and General Manager of Project Management at SkyDrive.
Fukuhara added: "Throughout the entire flight test period, we maintained an appropriate level of caution with every single flight to ensure that we could safely complete the flight profile and record the necessary data. We will continue to work toward our certification and commercialization goals while ensuring that our high regard for safety is always maintained."
Diverse Environments Accelerate the Path to 2028 Commercialization
SkyDrive operates test facilities in Toyota City, Aichi Prefecture, as well as at Yamaguchi Kirara Expo Memorial Park in Yamaguchi Prefecture. To gather flight experience closer to real-world commercial operating conditions, the company has deliberately conducted testing across a variety of environmental settings.
Through 48 flights conducted at locations outside its primary test centers, SkyDrive accumulated rich operational data expected to support punctual commercial operations once the aircraft enters service. The company aims to steadily accelerate its development pace, targeting commercial launch in 2028.
Team Cohesion: The Key to Overcoming Challenges
Christopher Rennie, Head of Testing at SkyDrive's Vehicle Development Division, was candid about the difficulty of reaching the milestone: "Flight testing is never easy, and achieving 300 safe flights is a meaningful accomplishment created through teamwork, strict discipline, and unwavering commitment across the entire organization."
Rennie acknowledged that the campaign involved technical, operational, and scheduling challenges, but noted that each flight strengthened the team's knowledge, improved aircraft performance, and brought the company closer to certification.
"Looking ahead to the upcoming type certification process and the production aircraft set to be manufactured next year, we are well aware that even greater challenges lie ahead. But with that same dedication and one-team mindset, we are ready to face them," Rennie said.
SkyDrive continues to advance the SD-05 through the certification process and plans to introduce its production aircraft model in 2026, maintaining steady progress toward its 2028 commercialization target.
