Thales Unveils RapidStriker System: 360-Degree Coverage and Automated Fire Control for Seconds-Fast Drone Interception
As battlefield drones proliferate at an unprecedented pace, militaries around the world are urgently seeking effective countermeasures. French defense technology group Thales has officially introduced RapidStriker at the Eurosatory defense exhibition in France — a mobile air defense system engineered to track and destroy aerial threats within seconds. The new capability integrates sensors, an automated fire control system, and multiple weapon options, enabling deployment alongside frontline units.
RapidStriker is designed to counter not only drones but also low-flying helicopters operating near the front lines.
Countering the Drone Surge
Rather than relying on a single weapon type, RapidStriker provides operators with multiple engagement options. The system combines sensors with automated fire control and selects the most appropriate effector based on mission requirements.
Operators can choose from guided or unguided 68mm and 70mm rockets, with the option to integrate small-caliber autocannons and remote-controlled munitions depending on operational needs.
According to Thales, RapidStriker can identify a detected threat within seconds, continuously track the target, and initiate an engagement sequence. Its high level of automation significantly reduces crew workload in high-pressure situations.
This response speed is increasingly critical — conventional defense systems struggle to cope with swarm attacks composed of low-cost drones. The rocket-based armament also adds operational flexibility: beyond counter-drone missions, it can support precision ground strikes or deliver area-saturation fire when broad coverage is required.
An Upgraded Bushmaster
Thales designed RapidStriker to be mounted across a range of combat vehicles rather than being tied to a single dedicated platform. At Eurosatory, Thales demonstrated the system on the newly unveiled Bushmaster 5.6 multi-role vehicle from its Australian subsidiary.
Known as the "Mulga variant," this latest version of the Bushmaster is built on a combat-proven platform. The vehicle can be configured with different mission packages depending on customer requirements — some may prioritize reconnaissance equipment, while others might opt for missile launchers or electronic warfare systems.
The updated design also introduces a left-hand drive configuration, tailored to meet the needs of export customers. Thales stated that the upgraded Bushmaster better reflects the realities of modern warfare, where adaptability is often as important as protection.
Integration into a Broader Air Defense Network
From the outset, RapidStriker was conceived as a node within a broader air defense architecture rather than a standalone asset. Thales confirmed that the system is fully compatible with SkyDefender, the company's integrated air and missile defense network, enabling commanders to share data across multiple assets and build a more comprehensive common operational picture.
Julien Assoun, Vice President of Thales Vehicles and Tactical Systems, said in a statement: "RapidStriker marks a decisive step forward for Thales in the fight against drones." He noted that the company moved from concept to delivery within a matter of months to meet urgent operational requirements, and that the system can be adapted to a wide range of combat vehicles.
RapidStriker is the latest addition to Thales' growing counter-drone product portfolio. Earlier at the same exhibition, Thales also unveiled a new-generation 70mm laser-guided rocket specifically designed for counter-drone missions. The back-to-back debuts of both products underscore the industry's intensifying focus on defeating drone threats — as unmanned systems become an increasingly decisive factor on today's battlefields.
