All graduating Marines from Marine Corps Recruit Depot (MCRD) Parris Island and San Diego are granted 10 days of leave before checking into their next school. After that leave period, newly graduated Marines attend the School of Infantry (SOI) to continue their military training.
What is the School of Infantry (SOI)?
SOI marks the transition from entry-level Marine to combat-ready Marine. At SOI, recently graduated enlisted Marines continue their education and training to become more proficient in the fundamentals of being a rifleman. Marines with an infantry Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) are trained at the Infantry Training Battalion (ITB), while all non-infantry Marines are trained at the Marine Combat Training Battalion (MCT).
Where is the School of Infantry (SOI)?
SOI operates at two locations: SOI West at Camp Pendleton, California, and SOI East at Camp Geiger, North Carolina.
Marines who attended boot camp at MCRD San Diego will report to SOI West at Camp Pendleton, California. Marines who attended MCRD Parris Island will report to SOI East at Camp Geiger, North Carolina.
How Long is the School of Infantry (SOI)?
Following graduation from MCRD Parris Island or San Diego, Marines will attend either ITB or MCT. The length and skill focus of training varies by track.
Infantry Training Battalion (ITB)
How Long is ITB Training?
Marines in the Infantry Training Battalion (ITB) attend the Infantry Marine Course (IMC), which is approximately 13 weeks long. The course prepares 03XX-MOS Marines with the skills and knowledge required to serve as infantry Marines.
The mission is to train, mentor, and evaluate Marines in the Infantry MOS with specific entry-level tasks under the leadership of Combat Instructors. Training covers marksmanship, patrolling, grenade usage, identifying and countering improvised explosive devices (IEDs), and land navigation, among other infantry skills. Upon successful completion, Marines graduate and are assigned to their unit.
ITB Mail
Because ITB training is 13 weeks long and largely conducted in the field, Marines will not always have access to their phones. Family and friends are encouraged to send letters as a primary form of communication during this period.
Marine Combat Training (MCT)
How Long is MCT Training?
Marine Combat Training (MCT) lasts approximately 4 weeks in the field. During this time, non-infantry Marines learn the essential combat skills required so that every Marine is prepared to fight as a rifleman, regardless of their MOS.
Training includes marksmanship, combat formations, and patrolling, as well as other combat-related skills. Upon successful completion, Marines graduate and proceed to their MOS school for additional specialized training.
MCT Mail
Because the majority of MCT training is conducted in the field over 4 weeks, Marines will not always have access to their phones. Family and friends are encouraged to send letters during this period.
USMC MOS Schools
After completing MCT, non-infantry Marines move on to their respective MOS schools for further specialized training before joining their units.
