ILA Berlin Air Show: Diehl Defence Unveils Integrated Air Defence / Counter-UAS IRIS-T SLS MK4 System
German defence company Diehl Defence showcased its upgraded IRIS-T SLS MK4 mobile short-range air defence system at ILA Berlin Air Show. The all-in-one platform integrates radar, command-and-control, and launcher on a single vehicle, offering a 12 km engagement range and 6 km intercept altitude. The system is designed to counter drones and other aerial threats, with a future fire-on-the-move capability planned.

Highlights
German defence company Diehl Defence showcased its upgraded IRIS-T SLS MK4 mobile air defence system at ILA Berlin Air Show, demonstrating next-generation multi-layered air defence and counter-UAS combat capabilities.
An All-in-One Air Defence Solution
In an official press release, the company stated: "This short-range air defence system is designed to protect manoeuvring forces and critical infrastructure against aerial threats." The fourth-generation IRIS-T SLS variant offers an engagement range of 12 kilometres and a maximum intercept altitude of 6 kilometres. The system integrates radar, a command-and-control (C2) system, and a launcher — including interceptor missiles — onto a single vehicle platform, forming a true all-in-one solution. Thanks to its high mobility and compact design, the system can be redeployed within a very short timeframe.
High Automation for Ultra-Fast Response
Diehl Defence highlighted that a key feature of the IRIS-T SLS MK4 is its high degree of automation, which significantly reduces the number of operators required and enables extremely fast reaction times — a critical advantage when engaging fast-moving threats such as drones.
Interceptor Missiles and Expansion Capabilities
The system uses the IRIS-T air-to-air missile as its interceptor munition. While the hardware remains unchanged, a future software update will enable fire-on-the-move capability — allowing missiles to be launched while the vehicle is in motion. The system can also be integrated with additional interceptors, such as Diehl Defence's own counter-UAS electronic missile CICADA (C-UAV eMissile), or fitted with a remote weapon station to further enhance operational flexibility.
NATO-Compliant and Force-Multiplying
The SLS system has been fully integrated into Diehl Defence's multi-layered air defence architecture. The MK4 version is fully compliant with NATO standards and operational requirements, including an eightfold increase in ammunition load, significantly boosting overall combat effectiveness.
