US-Made MAAWLR Short-Range Air Defense System Spotted in Ukraine, Targeted by Russian FPV Drone
Videos circulating on Russian and Ukrainian social media accounts are believed to show the first confirmed sighting of the US-made MAAWLR (Mobile Autonomous Anti-drone Weapon with Low-cost and Rapid deployment) short-range air defense system operating inside Ukraine. The footage reportedly shows the platform being engaged by a Russian FPV drone.
What Is the MAAWLR?
The MAAWLR is developed by US defense contractor Sierra Nevada Corporation (SNC). Built around the BRAWLR modular launcher mounted on a pickup truck chassis, the system is marketed as a "lightweight and cost-effective Counter-UAS solution" designed for rapid deployment in the field.
Multi-Missile Payload Flexibility
The BRAWLR modular launcher is compatible with a wide range of air-to-air and surface-to-air missiles, including:
- AIM-9 Sidewinder
- AIM-120 AMRAAM
- AIM-132 ASRAAM
- IRIS-T
- APKWS II
- R-27
The vehicle is also equipped with an MX-15 electro-optical targeting system for target detection and tracking. Depending on the munition loaded, SNC states the system can intercept aerial targets at ranges between 6 km (3.7 miles) and 15 km (9.3 miles).
Sensor and Communications Integration
The MAAWLR integrates the following sensors and communications equipment:
- RPS-82 X-band radar
- MX-15 FLIR electro-optical/infrared sensor
- SISLIR target illuminator
On the communications side, the system supports Link 16, Asterix, and OMNI data formats, and can be integrated into ATAK, WinTAK, and broader NATO-compatible command-and-control networks.
Delivery Numbers Remain Unknown
The exact number of MAAWLR systems delivered to Ukraine has not been disclosed.
