AeroVironment Signs MOU with Taiwan's Ubiqconn to Build Local Drone Common Controller Ecosystem
Taipei, Taiwan — June 11, 2026 — AeroVironment, Inc. (NASDAQ: AVAV), a global defense technology leader, today announced it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Ubiqconn Technology Inc., a Taiwan-based supplier of rugged controllers and industrial computing solutions. The two companies will collaborate on unmanned systems and mission management capabilities to support Taiwan's defense modernization and indigenous unmanned aircraft system (UAS) development programs.
Core of the Partnership: The Tomahawk Common Control Ecosystem
The MOU establishes the shared intent of AeroVironment and Ubiqconn to jointly develop and integrate common controller capabilities based on AV's Tomahawk Common Control Ecosystem. The collaboration is designed to meet the requirements of Taiwan's Ministry of National Defense (MND), including its indigenous UAS program targeting the procurement of tens of thousands of domestically produced drones.
AV will install and configure its Kinesis mission management software — a component of the AV_Halo COMMAND command-and-control (C2) software suite — on Ubiqconn's rugged controller platform. This will enable Taiwanese operators to control multiple UAS types from different original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) through a unified, scalable interface.
AV will provide a fully integrated common controller system, including Kinesis software access, KxM modules, and accompanying training and technical support to assist Ubiqconn with demonstration exercises and future integration activities.
Executive Statements
Wahid Nawabi, Chairman, President and CEO of AeroVironment, said: "Today's signing is a bridge to a deeper, more strategically significant partnership with Taiwan. By combining AV's combat-proven mission software, Ubiqconn's advanced rugged controller technology, and Taiwan's growing industrial base, we are laying the foundation for tailored, integrated networked unmanned systems solutions that address Taiwan's defense and security needs."
Paul Hsieh (謝博仁), CEO of Ubiqconn, commented: "Taiwan's defense and homeland security modernization requires new standards of interoperability, and this collaboration with AV is a critical step toward achieving that goal. By integrating Kinesis software into our rugged controller platform, Ubiqconn is proud to serve as the hardware backbone of the common controller ecosystem, supporting Taiwan's indigenous defense capabilities and strengthening our nation's resilience and sustainability."
Justin McFarlin, Vice President of International Business Development at AV, stated: "Given the MND's intent to procure tens of thousands of indigenous drones, a common controller ecosystem is essential for reducing training burdens, simplifying sustainment, and ensuring Taiwan's growing drone fleet remains interoperable and mission-ready across all branches of service. This collaboration also expands AV's ability to deliver scalable, interoperable solutions tailored to Taiwan's defense requirements and co-produced with its industrial base."
Ubiqconn's Role and Responsibilities
Under the MOU and anticipated follow-on agreements, Ubiqconn will:
- Provide physical UAS controller hardware to support Kinesis integration, configuration, and functional testing
- Share technical information and offer controller compatibility prioritization recommendations for the UAS platforms most commonly used within Taiwan's defense and security community
- Lead in-market demonstrations and outreach activities to Taiwan's MND and other government stakeholders, helping to shape common controller requirements
- Engage indigenous drone OEMs to expand the Kinesis compatibility database to include domestically produced UAS types
Broader Collaboration Context
