Shield AI and Destinus Complete Joint Flight Tests for Autonomous Strike Technology, Targeting Future Cruise Missile Integration
U.S. defense tech firm Shield AI and European counterpart Destinus have completed joint flight tests validating autonomous cooperative strike capabilities using the Hornet interceptor drone system equipped with Hivemind AI. The Hornet features a minimum operational radius of 75 km, a 1.5 kg payload capacity, and GPS-denied operation. The tests lay the groundwork for integrating Hivemind into the Ruta cruise missile, with Destinus planning to transfer these capabilities to combat validation in Ukraine.

Shield AI and Destinus Complete Joint Flight Tests for Autonomous Strike Technology, Targeting Future Cruise Missile Integration
U.S. defense technology company Shield AI and European defense tech firm Destinus have completed joint flight tests successfully validating autonomous cooperative strike capabilities centered on the Hornet interceptor drone system.
Hornet: A Multi-Mission Autonomous Platform
Designed and manufactured by Destinus, the Hornet is a multi-purpose autonomous aerial platform capable of performing counter-UAS (C-UAS), precision strike, reconnaissance, and data relay missions. It can also be integrated into existing multi-layered air defense architectures to protect forward operating bases and critical infrastructure against kamikaze drone swarm attacks.
Key technical specifications of the Hornet include:
- Minimum operational radius: 75 km (approximately 46.6 miles)
- Maximum payload: 1.5 kg (approximately 3.3 lbs)
- Special capability: Operational in GPS-denied environments
According to Destinus, the Hornet serves as the initial baseline platform for integrating Shield AI's Hivemind AI pilot into the Destinus product line. The company's drone systems and cruise missile product lines share a common architecture, facilitating cross-platform integration while reducing technical risk.
Destinus CTO Tim Moser stated: "The Destinus platform runs on our own flight control architecture, and the integration of Hivemind validated that we can bring in third-party autonomy capabilities without ceding design authority over the system."
Flight Test Details
The primary objective of the full-mission flight test was to pave the way for integrating Hivemind with the Ruta cruise missile. The Ruta is designed for precision strikes against hardened targets and high-value military objectives, and will be deployed in two batches with progressively increased range and payload capacity. It features low-altitude terrain-following flight and can operate in GPS-denied and electronic warfare environments.
The flight tests covered a complete mission sequence simulating Ruta's real-world operational workflow, including:
- Autonomy-assisted mission planning via ground control station
- Radio communications testing
- Autonomous terrain-following flight
- In-flight target information updates
- Autonomous terminal maneuvers executed on operator command
Destinus had previously completed aerial cooperative formation tests between the Hornet and Shield AI's V-BAT drone, in which the V-BAT served as a communications relay node between the ground station and multiple Destinus Hornet interceptor drones.
Hivemind's Role in Cooperative Missions
Shield AI's Hivemind AI pilot is a cross-platform autonomous flight software suite that enables drones to sense, decide, and act autonomously within defined command authority and operator-specified parameters. It can dynamically adapt mission plans, respond to unexpected situations, avoid obstacles, and execute complex missions.
In cooperative swarm scenarios, Hivemind-equipped drones communicate peer-to-peer, share battlefield situational awareness, and coordinate maneuvers, reducing reliance on ground control stations. The architecture is designed to maintain mission continuity even if data links are jammed or disrupted.
Ukraine Combat Validation Plans
Destinus plans to transfer these autonomous cooperative strike capabilities to Ukraine via the Ruta platform, enabling cooperative strike behaviors between V-BAT and multiple Ruta systems to be validated in a real-world combat environment.
