Evolito Submits E800 Electric Motor Type Certificate Application for Electra EL9

UK electric propulsion developer Evolito has formally submitted a Type Certificate (TC) application to the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) for its E800 electric motor. The engine is intended to power the Electra EL9 ultra-short takeoff and landing (USTOL) hybrid-electric aircraft.

Evolito announced the submission on 17 July 2026, describing the milestone as representing "a pivotal point in the journey of an aerospace product from development to certification."

First Member of the E800 Engine Family

Evolito positions the E800 as the inaugural product in its E800 series electric engine family. The certification framework established through the EL9 programme is expected to serve as the foundation for future aviation applications across the product line.

Evolito CEO Dr. Chris Harris commented: "This is a defining moment for Evolito. Submitting a Type Certificate application is more than a regulatory milestone — it is a tangible demonstration of the maturity of our product, our processes, and our organisation. Certification Pursued Under SC-E19 Special Conditions

Evolito's certification programme uses SC-E19 special conditions as its certification basis — a framework specifically designed to govern electric and hybrid propulsion systems.

UK Minister for Industry Chris McDonald welcomed the development: "Evolito achieving this milestone demonstrates how the UK can turn world-class innovation into the technology that powers the next generation of flight. This is exactly the kind of ambition that will strengthen our industrial base and keep the UK at the forefront of advanced aerospace."

Core Technology Designed for Aerospace Propulsion

According to Evolito, the E800 electric motor has been purpose-built for aerospace propulsion and optimised for propeller-driven aircraft. The motor incorporates Evolito's proprietary axial-flux motor technology and integrates an onboard control system, cooling system, and propeller load-bearing structure into a compact, unified design — built to meet both certification requirements and production-scale specifications.

Dr. Richard Shepherd, Evolito's Head of Airworthiness and a former Rolls-Royce airworthiness chief, stated: "Certification is where aerospace innovation becomes aerospace reality. This application demonstrates that electric propulsion has moved beyond concept studies and flight demonstrations, and is becoming a certifiable, scalable, and commercially deployable technology. We are proud to be leading this transition alongside not only the airframer but also the certification authority."

Electra Selected Evolito as Supplier in 2025

Electra announced in October 2025 that it had selected Evolito as the supplier of Electric Propulsion Units (EPUs) for the EL9 aircraft. The submission of the Type Certificate application marks a significant milestone in the ongoing deepening of that partnership.
