France Orders 5,000 Sonora ISR Drones from Harmattan AI in Major Defense Expansion

France's Ministry of Defense has announced a follow-on procurement of 5,000 Sonora ISR (Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance) drones from domestic defense-technology company Harmattan AI, representing a fivefold expansion of the original 1,000-unit contract signed in 2025.

Military Exercises Validate Operational Potential

The large-scale follow-on order was driven primarily by a recent French military exercise in which the Sonora drone demonstrated significant potential for future autonomous combat missions. The exercise results gave military leadership the confidence to commit to an order five times the size of the initial procurement, pointing to the platform's readiness for next-generation ISR roles.

Backing the Domestic Defense Industry

The contract award also reflects France's broader policy of supporting its homegrown defense technology sector. As a French-developed platform, the Sonora series is viewed as a key asset in enhancing the French military's ISR capabilities and advancing the country's transition toward unmanned autonomous operations.

Building Autonomous Combat Capability

As major military powers worldwide race to develop drone and AI-driven autonomous combat systems, France's large-scale procurement is widely seen as a concrete step toward greater military-technological autonomy and operational effectiveness within the NATO framework.
