EU and Japan Drone Airspace Experts Convene in Tokyo to Advance U-space Cooperation
The EU's SESAR Joint Undertaking (SESAR JU) and Japan's New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) jointly hosted a technical workshop in Tokyo in June, bringing together leading European and Japanese experts to share knowledge and practical experience in U-space, innovative air mobility, and the integration of new airspace users.
More Than 50 European Experts Attend
The workshop attracted over 50 experts from across Europe, representing research organizations, industry players, air navigation service providers, and EU institutions. Participating organizations included EUROCONTROL, Unifly, DLR, FREQUENTIS, SAFRAN, TOPVIEW, ENAIRE, and CRIDA, with representatives from the European External Action Service (EEAS) also in attendance.
Discussions Focus on Core Airspace Integration Challenges
The workshop provided a key platform for participants to compare progress, share practical insights, and identify future areas of collaboration. Topics covered included:
- U-space implementation status
- UTM (Unmanned Traffic Management) and ATM (Air Traffic Management) integration
- eVTOL vertiport operations
- Drone separation management
- Detect-and-Avoid (DAA) technologies
- Dynamic airspace reconfiguration
- Standardization processes
European Approach Draws Strong International Interest
SESAR JU noted that "the exchange highlighted the significant progress achieved across SESAR programmes and the growing international interest in Europe's approach to integrating drones and advanced air mobility services." Participants also discussed opportunities to deepen collaboration through Horizon Europe and SESAR research activities — a development made more significant by Horizon Europe's formal opening to Japanese institutions.
Participation in Japan Drone 2026 Showcases European Achievements
The week of activities concluded with SESAR JU's participation in the Japan Drone 2026 exhibition, where the organization hosted a dedicated booth and took part in a panel discussion focused on EU-Japan synergies. The exhibition provided an ideal stage to showcase European achievements, deepen dialogue with stakeholders across the drone industry ecosystem, and reinforce discussions on the future direction of new airspace user integration.
