Spain Hosts SPATIO Project Open Day Showcasing U-space Drone Airspace Management Services
The European SPATIO project recently held an open day in A Coruña, Spain, demonstrating drone traffic management (UTM) systems under real-world conditions. Led by Spanish air navigation service provider ENAIRE through its R&D subsidiary CRIDA, the project runs from 2023 to 2026, involves more than 20 European partners, and has received €7 million in EU funding under the SESAR 3 Joint Undertaking.

Highlights
- The SPATIO project held an open day in A Coruña, Spain, demonstrating UTM and U-space services under real-world conditions.
- ENAIRE leads the project through its R&D subsidiary CRIDA as part of the SESAR 3 Joint Undertaking, with over 20 European partners.
- The project has secured €7 million in EU funding under Grant Agreement No. 101114674 and runs from 2023 to 2026.

Spain Hosts SPATIO Project Open Day Showcasing U-space Drone Airspace Management Services
The European SPATIO project recently held an open day in A Coruña, Spain, demonstrating the operational results of a drone traffic management (UTM) system under real-world conditions. The event drew participation from industry professionals and technical specialists alike.
Project Background
The SPATIO project is led by Spanish air navigation service provider ENAIRE through its R&D subsidiary CRIDA, and forms part of a strategic initiative under the SESAR 3 Joint Undertaking. The project runs for three years (2023–2026) and aims to develop advanced U-space services that enable unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) to be safely integrated into European airspace. SPATIO currently involves more than 20 European partners and has received €7 million in funding from the SESAR programme under Grant Agreement No. 101114674.
Core Technical Achievements
To date, the SPATIO project has developed and validated several advanced services:
- Drone Separation Management: Combines pre-flight planning with real-time control to prevent conflicts between drones.
- Flight Noise Impact Assessment and Mitigation: Identifies and mitigates the acoustic footprint of drone operations, preventing noise levels from exceeding thresholds that could disturb the public.
- Ground Safety Assurance: Identifies high-risk zones for incidents over densely populated areas and sets drone density limits in those areas to ensure safety on the ground.
Open Day Highlights
The open day was held at the ITG Technology Centre's test facilities, giving attendees first-hand insight into project outcomes through technical presentations and live demonstrations.
The agenda proceeded as follows:
- EU Context Introduction: The European Commission provided background through the SESAR 3 Joint Undertaking.
- Project Overview: ENAIRE presented the SPATIO project and its positioning within the broader European framework.
- Dynamic Airspace Capacity Management Demonstration: CRIDA, Sopra Steria, and INECO jointly demonstrated how airspace capacity can be managed dynamically, taking into account both noise impact and personnel safety.
- In-Flight Conflict Detection and Resolution: Indra showcased a solution for predicting and resolving in-flight conflicts, while ENAIRE, CRIDA, and INECO participated in a live demonstration of a multi-service-provider U-space environment.
Project Outlook
The SPATIO project is scheduled to hold its final results event at ENAIRE headquarters on 22 September 2026, formally marking the conclusion of the three-year initiative.
ENAIRE stated that the SPATIO project "contributes to laying the foundations for a future high-performance U-space airspace, supporting applications such as logistics, infrastructure inspection, and urban air mobility (UAM), while promoting public acceptance of drones by controlling factors such as noise and visual impact."
